Toto was formed in the year 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also famous studio musicians with Boz Scaggs) and singer/bassist Bobby Kimball. In 1981 the third album by Toto Turn Back was a complete failure however, they bounce back with their fourth album Isolation with two hits, including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour makes them a household name throughout the globe.
After a gap of few years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in 1986. The album is a departure from the ballads of previous albums, and also features some heavy rock. This was their first platinum album in North America.
During the recording of the band’s fifth album the band loses their manager and are financially in trouble. They decide to change their name and create a new album with the new producer. The lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen departs and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of the legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph is more natural as a frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a needed boost.
The band released Mindfields in 1999 and goes on a major tour across the globe. After several weeks in Europe The band then travels to Japan for sold-out shows. After a short hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and release their first live album, Absolutely Live in 1993. It also features a cover of Weezer’s song Hash Pipe as a response to the band’s performance in Africa on their recent tour. Toto’s touring group is comprised by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.
